To pay or not to pay

Getting a startup to a point where it is self-sufficient is probably the first goal of an entrepreneur, making a profit is just a bonus after that. But how do you create a service or a product that people are really going to want to pay for, and at what point do you start asking them to pay for it?

There are several business models out there each with their own pros and cons. Do I go for a free-mium model with a premium version launching later? Do I get them to sign up to a payment plan but give some a free trial? Do I open it all up for free and then bring in a payment structure once I can prove the value?

So, we struggle to find the compromise that suits both sides and eventually will end up trying a series or options until one fits.
Questions now, which one to start with.
